The books "Like Water For Chocolate" by Laura Esquirel and "A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez was similar and different. They were similar because both the books fall under the genre magical realism. Both books were different in terms of sensory details and way of writing.
Esquirel's book had sensory details which were usually related to touch, textures and scents. For example: In the book, Tita said she felt like dough in boiling water when Pedro looked passionately at her which says that she had more sensory details related to touch. Also her book had short sentences which were poetic and I felt like reading a script of a soap opera while reading her book. I also liked how the book gave me a bit of knowledge about the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican way of life in an earlier time.
Marquez's story had more sensory details related what you see. For example: Marquez had a very detailed explanation of the old man with huge dirt and half plucked buzzard wings, a barely toothed mouth and balding scalp which comes under the seeing part of sensory detail. Marquez also had metaphors rather than personification. Marquez's way of writing was more longer than Esquirel's. I enjoyed Marquez's way of writing as it made me imagine how the old man with enormous wings would've looked like.
I do not think that I can decide which story was better as the plot in both of them were completely different but if I were to decide which story was better by looking at the way it was written I would definitely choose Esquirel's "Like Water For Chocolate" as it was a more poetic read.
